Responsible Research and Innovation: A New HoRRIzon for Europe

Responsible Research and Innovation: A ‘New HoRRIzon’ for Europe

Research and innovation now play a nodal role within current circular production models. Europe vigorously bets on the research side in order to compete on the global scenario. At the same time, the ever more decisive impact that certain technologies produce in the development of social dynamics requires an awareness, not only in their diffusion, but also and above all regarding their design. However, the speed of technological development and the uncertain nature of innovation are not easily framed in traditional management processes and require flexible forms, which can be used by different actors in different contexts. The device of responsibility that the European Commission has recently adopted is therefore called to play this regulatory role in order to direct research and innovation towards an economically prosperous but at the same time sustainable and ethically acceptable future. The theme of the workshop is therefore to analyse some of the problems and challenges currently open concerning the relationship between science, ethics and democracy, and to offer working hypotheses useful for developing these thematic issues. The workshop will consist of social scientists and actors involved in the European governance of research and innovation
